Do you wonder why Swiss CBD is constantly cited as the benchmark for the European market? Why do enthusiasts from France, Germany or Belgium order products stamped Swiss Made, when there are local brands back home? The answer can be summed up in a few words: the quality of the raw materials and the authenticity of the end product<\/strong>. And behind this lies a fundamental<\/em> difference in legislation, and some less-than-stellar<\/em> practices that it’s time to shed some light on. <\/p>\n

\ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddfa The reality of the European market: 0.3% THC, but at what price?<\/h2>\n

In the European Union, the legal limit for THC in commercial hemp is set at 0.3%<\/strong> (sometimes 0.2%, depending on the country). This is more than three times lower than the Swiss limit of 1%. This difference is no mere detail: it radically changes the nature of the products you find on the market. <\/p>\n

The problem is that naturally grown hemp flower rarely contains less than 0.3% THC. Interesting varieties in terms of aroma profile and CBD richness almost systematically exceed this threshold. To remain legal in the EU, European growers must therefore use manipulation techniques<\/strong> that profoundly alter the quality of the product. <\/p>\n

Here’s what goes on behind the scenes of the European market – and what vendors never mention on their product sheets.<\/p>\n

1. Flower washing<\/h3>\n

The flowers are literally washed in solvents<\/strong> (alcohol, hexane, butane) to extract the trichomes – hence the THC, but also part of the CBD and almost all the terpenes<\/em> that make up the taste and aroma. The result: visually “empty” flowers with a bland aromatic profile, more like hay than cannabis. <\/p>\n

2. Deterpenization<\/h3>\n

A variation on washing, deterpenization extracts the terpenes, preserving the cannabinoids but flattening the aromatic profile. The product loses its character, its nose, its complexity<\/strong>. Producers often compensate by spraying synthetic terpenes afterwards, resulting in artificial, sometimes caricatured odors. <\/p>\n

3. Post-treatment aromatic spray<\/h3>\n

The washed flowers are then sprayed with industrial terpenes<\/strong> to restore their scent. Except that these terpenes are manufactured in laboratories and lack the complexity of natural profiles. You often recognize these flowers by their overly “clean”, overly “defined” scent, more reminiscent of a chemical than a plant. <\/p>\n

4. Reconstitution with CBD isolate<\/h3>\n

To boost the CBD content shown (which has dropped with washing), some add synthetic CBD isolate<\/strong> to the flowers. So you end up with a product that has 15-20% CBD on paper, but most of which comes from an added crystalline powder – not at all the same kind as the plant’s natural CBD. <\/p>\n

5. Cold storage<\/h3>\n

Some cannabis strains degrade their THC over time if stored in cold storage for months on end. This is a gentler technique, but it takes time and doesn’t totally eliminate the problem. <\/p>\n

In Switzerland, the 1% THC threshold is much more permissive<\/strong>. In practical terms, this means that our growers don’t need to cheat: they can let the plant grow naturally<\/strong>, harvest it when ripe, dry it and package it without any chemical manipulation. <\/p>\n
